Helpful Hints - Top 10 Ways to Save Money:
- Cook at home often: If both partners work, this is likely to be very difficult. Even cooking at home a few more times a week than usual will have a positive impact on your pocketbook.
-
Make your own coffee: You'd be surprised how much you can spend on specialty coffees in the long run. You don’t have to entirely stop drinking coffee but making it at home is much cheaper.
-
Brown bag lunch at least a few days a week: People can typically spend $5 to $10 a day on lunching out. Pack your lunch ahead of time and save a bundle. Be sure to make the prospect more enjoyable by buying the things you actually want to eat. You may also get into the habit more if you pack it the night before so you're not rushing around in the morning.
-
Make a list before going shopping: People have a very tough time resisting the temptation to purchase extras while shopping. Without a list you will buy items that you simply do not need. Even worse you may forget to purchase the actual item you came to the store for in the first place. If you plan on cooking at home, pre-plan a rough menu and make a list before you go grocery shopping. Getting all that you need in one trip can help avoid another unnecessary trip and temptation.
-
Go grocery shopping while you are in a hurry:Schedule your grocery shopping time inbetween your favorite shows or prior to an appointment so you are in and out and don't have time to look around and buy things you don't need.
-
Watch out for expiration dates on perishable goods: This one seems intuitive when you read it, but I am surprised at how many people do not pay attention to expiry dates. No point getting a gallon of milk if it is going to turn sour with a couple of days. Same goes for meat, eggs, yogurt, spreads, frozen items, deli/bakery items etc. Some people say you can use a few items a few days after expiry – but I personally value my health more than money and would rather avoid buying such items in the first place.
-
Buy in bulk whenever possible: When it comes to non-perishable items, buy in bulk whenever you find something on sale. Good items to stock up on are, cereals, tinned goods, rice, beans, pasta, coke, toothpaste, body wash, shampoo, toilet paper etc. For such items, shopping at warehouse stores like Costco, Sam’s Club etc can save you quite a bit of money. Be sure you stick strictly to your shopping list when you shop at these places.
-
Bottle your own water: Buy a water filter and fill up empty bottles from home. It's quick, easy and can save a bundle.
-
Regulate your electric use: When not in use, unplug electric appliances. Unplugging the TV instead of just turning it off can save a lot of electricity! When not in a room, switch off the lights and the fan. Use a programmable thermostat to control your A/C and heater usage.
-
Be aware of your bank balance and avoid over draft fees: If you use your checking account often or have some bills that are paid automatically from your checking account, be aware of the balance and avoid overdraft fees.

Soy Far, So Good
In the remanufacturing industry, toner cartridges are already recyclable, but what about toner itself? Toner, the powdery substance used in laser printers is a petroleum based product. However, research into bio-derived toner offers a sustainable option to the toner industry’s reliance on non renewable, oil based products. Poised to hit markets within the year, soy-based toner offers an environmentally friendly alternative to its petroleum-based predecessor.
In his article on bio-derived toners, author Michael Carlotta notes America’s dependency on an unsustainable resource: oil. As the cost of oil rises, consumers are looking for viable substitutes. He claims that “Bio-derived toner has the potential to quickly become the toner of choice for “green” conscience consumers, industries, businesses and governments” (Carlotta, 2006).
The New Soy-sation
Battelle, an independent research firm, developed the bio-derived toner and is working with companies to create a marketable product (United, 2004). Much of its soy-based research is funded by the Ohio Soy Bean Council, with Ohio being home to approximately 30000 soy bean farmers (Carlotta, 2006). Initial research centered on producing black toner, but representatives from Batelle state their soy-based toner has the potential to translate successfully into color toner as well (Carlotta, 2006).
Carlotta also reveals in his article that many OEM printer manufacturing firms are researching soy-derived toner as well. He states that unlike Battelle, these companies do not intend to market the environmentally friendly soy-based products, instead OEM manufacturers “focus […] along the lines of preventing market share loss rather than changing the way their business is run” (Carlotta, 2006). This could mean that when soy-based products hit the market, OEM manufacturers may try to compete with their own soy-derived toner. However, these OEM manufacturers are narrow in their scope because although they research and develop bio-derived toner, these companies have not initiated or marketed campaigns for use of this renewable toner (Carlotta, 2006). Carlotta continues to state that it is the remanufacturing industry, with its efforts to reduce waste and recycle toner cartridges, that will most likely help market and produce a competitive and bio-based toner (Carlotta, 2006).
Soy Many Benefits
Although soy-derived toner is currently in the final stages of development, soy-based ink for inkjet cartridges is not a new invention. It has come into common use over the past 15 years, with 90% of newspapers switching to soy or vegetable-based inks (United, 2004). Soy based ink increases the recyclability of paper, allowing for paper to be broken down into clean paper pulp more easily (United, 2004). Research into soy-based toner has also established that the process of de-inking paper so that it can be recycled is much easier when the ink is soy-based instead of petroleum-based. Lab results completed by Battelle reveal that paper pulp from de-inking soy-based paper “contained extremely low levels of ink residue, resulting in cleaner and brighter pulp” (United, 2004). Less ink residue means easier and more effective recycling of paper.
Studies have shown that if all oil-based inks were replaced by soy based ink, “457 million pounds of soybean oil, equivalent to 41.5 million bushels. This represents only about 1.8% of U.S. Soybean production” (Weisenbach, 2000). Thus, soy bean producers could easily supply the demand for soy-based inks and even toner, if soy-derived toner became the market standard. Unlike oil, soy is a renewable product, and soy-based toner offers a cleaner and sustainable source of toner.
Soy and even corn-based toner not only make use of a renewable resource, the toner itself can be produced using pre-existing technology and equipment (Carlotta 2006). Therefore, when soy-based toner hits the markets, producers and remanufacturers do not have to reinvest in expensive machinery and equipment.

Happy Father's Day
History of Father's Day in US
Modern version of Father's Day celebration originated in United States of America and thereafter the tradition spread in countries around the world. The world owes thanks to Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd a loving daughter from Spokane, Washington as it is because of her struggle that Father's Day saw the light of the day.
The idea of Father's Day celebration originated in Sonora's mind when she per chance listened to Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Fairly mature at the age 27, Sonora pondered if there is a day to honor mother then why not for father? Sonora felt strongly for fathers because of the affection she received from her own father Mr William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran. Sonora's mother died while childbirth when she was just 16. Mr Smart raised the newborn and five other children with love and care.
Inspired by Ms Anna Jarvis's struggle to promote Mother's Day, Ms Dodd began a rigorous campaign to celebrate Father's Day in US. The Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) supported Sonora's cause. As a result Spokane celebrated its first Father's Day on June 19, 1910. Though there was initial hesitation the idea gained gradual popularity all over US and Fathers Day came to be celebrated in cities across the country.
Looking at the heightened popularity of Father's Day in US, President Woodrow Wilson approved of this idea in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge too supported the idea of a national Father's Day in 1924 to, "establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations". After a protracted struggle of over four decades, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day in 1966. Then in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. Sonora Smart Dodd was honored for her contribution at the World's Fair in Spokane in 1974. Mrs. Dodd died in 1978 at age 96.

Welcome Summer!
Summer is almost officially here and that means kids are out of school, bbq's are being dusted off, and vacations are fast approaching. Summers have always been special and exciting. Childhood is filled with warm summer days with nothing to do but celebrate freedom. Sadly most adults are unable to continue the tradition of having summers off but the memories linger and remind us of how good it feels to have the sun on our skin and responsibility forgotten. I recall swimming with friends, riding bikes, and building sand castles at the beach while my mom doused me in sunblock. There were picnics and outside parties at the park where we whacked away at pinatas and ate too much cake. I am grateful every year for this wonderful season that brings everyone outside even if it is only to complain about the heat. I watch the children run and play and hope that they appreciate these moments that define the warmest months on the calendar, for like me, they will miss them when they are gone.

What is MICR toner?
The acronym "MICR" stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. MICR is a process by which documents are printed using magnetic ink and special fonts to create machine readable information for quick document processing. The principal purpose of MICR toner is to print accounting and routing information on bank checks and other negotiable documents.
MICR toner contains an iron oxide that permits the "bank line" information of a check to be read by electronic bank processing equipment. MICR toner is similar to standard laser printer toner, but requires a 50% to 60% iron oxide additive content to meet ANSI specifications for readability standards.
Benefits of a MICR Laser Check System
- MICR Laser check processing provides a much higher level of security.
- Cost reductions; due to the elimination of the inventory and control of pre-printed check stock
- Creating a MICR Laser check is a single step process that adds payee data, signatures, logos, bank identification, and the MICR line to the check.
- Increased flexibility to add, change or delete new bank accounts on demand, without ordering new check stock.
- Decreased exposure to check fraud.

We now carry HP Photo Paper, search photo paper in the search bar for a quick list of all the ones we currently have. There are many advantages to printing your own photos at home.
Advantages of printing your own photos
The decision whether to print your own photos or have them processed is exactly the same issue as having your own darkroom or sending film out to have it developed by a lab – it is all about controlling the final output. The primary advantage of printing your own photos is that you have complete control over the image quality. If you are not happy with a print, you can adjust it using photo editing software and reprint, learning as you go.
There is something very satisfying about taking a raw digital image and manipulating it until you feel that it is “just right”. For those who enjoy having creative control over their photos, it is more of a control issue than a cost issue, and worth the extra cost. If you are serious about photography, you may agree that commercially made prints (made by some operators) can never match the prints you make yourself.
One way to cut printing costs is to print the images smaller than the final desired size, until you are sure that the output will be what you expect. Considering that not every print on a roll of 35mm film will be a “keeper,” likewise not every digital image will be ideal. The goal is to select the best images and make them as perfect as possible.
To get the best results when printing color photos, be sure to use photo paper because it is designed to absorb the ink correctly. Photo Paper Glossy delivers a smooth, glossy finish for everyday photos with the look of true photographic prints. Premium Photo Paper Glossy costs a little more but it has a high gloss finish that is perfect for printing your favorite cherished photos and enlargements for use with glass frames and photo albums. Whichever paper you use, be sure to change your print settings to select the correct type of photo paper that you are using.
If digital photography and printing your own color photographs is your passion, inkjet color printers will offer you the variety and color controls that you need for the best price.

Now more than ever, we are all looking to save where we can. Remanufactured toners can save your company an average of 35-55% per month!
-
Since 1991, King County has successfully used remanufactured toner cartridges in all departments. In 2001, King County purchased 4,765 remanufactured toner cartridges at
a cost of approximately $155,500. Since the cost of these cartridges is approximately one third that of new cartridges, these purchases saved the county $300,000 in that year alone.
-
In 2002, the Oakland Unified School District purchased 178 remanufactured cartridges and saved over $2,700, approximately 33% off the price they were paying for new cartridges.
